How do I view GPS distances?

During a round, Apple Watch will show front, middle, and back distances to the green on the right side of the screen. Distances are based on the GPS location available to the watch.

Premium users will also see Plays Like distances for the center target on the left side of the screen. If you would like to adjust the wind or see more details on the Plays Like distances, you can swipe once to the right to do so.

In addition to GPS Distances, Premium users can click on the “Map” icon in the bottom left corner of the screen to see Apple Watch Maps and 3D Greens

  1. Swipe left until you get to the furthest page.
  2. Click the “Settings” gear wheel in the top right.

Alternatively, you can revisit where swings were detected after your round in the Round Summary.

If you would like to track every shot in your round automatically, you can use the Smart Tracking scoring mode. Visit this article to learn more about Smart Tracking on Apple Watch.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I start a round directly from my Apple Watch?

Yes. You can select your course, holes, starting hole, tees, and scoring mode directly from your Apple Watch without first opening 18Birdies on your iPhone.

Do I need to carry my iPhone during the round?

If you have an Apple Watch with Cellular, you can play the round without your phone, though we recommend having your phone nearby. If you have an Apple Watch without Cellular, you will need to have your phone nearby to sync any scoring data.

You can manage most key round actions from your Apple Watch. Your watch and iPhone will sync automatically, but we recommend reviewing and confirming your completed scorecard on your iPhone after the round.

Why isn’t my course available on my Apple Watch?

Make sure 18Birdies is installed on your watch and that your watch and iPhone have synced. If the course still does not appear, start the round from your iPhone and then open 18Birdies on your Apple Watch.

Why are the GPS distances on my watch different from my phone?

Distances on your Apple Watch are based on the signal from the Apple Watch itself, not from your phone. If your phone and watch are in different locations, you will see different distances.

Which Apple Watch features require Premium?

Premium members can access Plays Like distances, Apple Watch Maps, 3D Greens, Auto Swing Detection, and the Smart Tracking scoring mode.

Can I adjust the wind used for Plays Like distances?

Yes. Swipe once to the right from the main GPS screen to adjust the wind and view additional Plays Like details.

Can I enter scores without tracking additional stats?

Yes. In your Apple Watch round settings, turn off Stats Tracking to skip stats such as putts, fairway results, greens in regulation, chip shots, sand shots, and penalties.

Why didn’t my watch automatically move to the next hole?

The watch should advance after you enter your score. If you are not entering scores, enable Switch Hole Based On Location in your Apple Watch round settings.

How do I correct the hole shown on my watch?

Tap the hole number in the upper-left corner of the screen and select the correct hole manually.

What is the difference between manual shot tracking and Auto Swing Detection?

With manual tracking, you tap Track Shot before hitting, select your club, and save the shot when you reach the ball. Auto Swing Detection identifies the swing location for you, allowing you to open the detected shot and save it when you reach your ball.

Does Auto Swing Detection automatically save every shot?

Not in Classic Scoring. Detected swings can be reviewed and saved during the round or revisited afterward in the Round Summary. To track the entire round automatically, use Smart Tracking.

Can I access shot tracking more quickly from the main screen?

Yes. In the Apple Watch round settings, select Home Page, then replace the Map shortcut with Track Shot.

Can I edit or review detected shots after my round?

Yes. You can revisit detected swings and review your tracked shots from the Round Summary on your iPhone. Click on your round and scroll down until you see “Tracked Shots”.

What should I do if my Apple Watch detects a swing that wasn’t a golf shot?

You do not need to save every detected swing. Review detected swings during the round or afterward and only confirm the shots you want included.

Do I need to finish the round on my iPhone?

You can finish the round and view your final score from Apple Watch, but you need to open 18Birdies on your iPhone afterward to review and confirm the completed scorecard.

Why don’t I see Maps, 3D Greens, or Plays Like distances?

These features require an active Premium membership. Make sure you are signed into the correct 18Birdies account and that your Apple Watch has synced with your iPhone.

Maps and 3D Greens may not be available for all courses on 18Birdies at this time.

Why did my score not sync?

Make sure your iPhone and Apple Watch are connected and that the 18Birdies app is open on both devices.

If the score still does not sync, close and reopen the app, then check the completed round from your iPhone.

Does Apple Watch track my round as a workout?

Apple Watch may record activity data depending on your Apple Watch and Fitness settings.

18Birdies round behavior may not be the same as starting a dedicated golf workout in the Apple Fitness app.

What happens if my phone dies during the round?

Watch behavior may vary depending on device, connection, and round setup.

If your phone dies, continue tracking what you can from the watch. When your phone is available again, reopen 18Birdies and check whether the round synced correctly.
