How do Penalties Affect Strokes Gained?

Whether it’s a sliced tee shot or a thinned wedge, penalties happen – we’ve all been there. But if you’re scoring with Smart Tracking, how are these factored into your Strokes Gained stats?

Adding Penalties

To track Strokes Gained stats on 18Birdies, you’ll need to activate the Smart Tracking scoring mode.

To add a penalty in Smart Tracking, click “+ Penalties” at the bottom of the scoring panel. A list of strokes will appear in a dropdown, defaulting to zero penalties with a “+” and “-” button next to each.

Click the “+” button to assign penalties to a specific stroke. For example, if you slice your tee shot into a hazard, add one penalty to your first stroke.

As you add penalties, your options will automatically adjust to reflect how many penalties you have added.

How are my Strokes Gained Stats Affected?

When calculating your Strokes Gained, every shot gets placed into a specific Strokes Gained Category. We handle the math for you – figuring out how many strokes you’ve gained or lost based on your shot outcome, and adding that to the right category.

When you add a penalty to your shot, we subtract the full penalty from the shot’s category automatically, and we make it easy for you to see. Shake it off, and focus on the next shot!
