How It Works

The Meta Ray-Ban integration turns your glasses into your on-course caddy:

1. One-Time Setup

Connect Your Accounts:

  • Download the Meta AI app and pair your Ray-Ban glasses
  • Open the Meta AI app and go to App Connections
  • Select 18Birdies and connect your account
  • Grant permissions for 18Birdies to share golf data with Meta AI

2. Start Your Round in 18Birdies

You can start your round directly from the Glasses by say “Hey Meta, start my round at <insert course>> from the <insert Tees>.” You can also open 18Birdies on your phone and start a round as you normally would. Select your course and tee box.

3. Use Voice Commands On the Course

Once your round is started, simply say:

  • Hey Meta, what's the distance to the pin? > Get yardage and club recommendation
  • Hey Meta, log a birdie > Record your score hands-free
  • Hey Meta, what's the wind direction? > Check real-time weather conditions
  • Hey Meta, take a photo > Capture moments without pulling out your phone

Meta AI will respond through your glasses' speakers, and 18Birdies will update your round in real-time.

What You Can Do With Voice Commands

  • "What's the distance to the green?"
  • "What club should I use?" (requires Golf Bag setup in 18Birdies)

  • "Log a 4" (by stroke count)
  • "What's my score?" (get current score relative to par)

Weather Information:

  • "What's the wind direction?"
  • "What's the temperature?"
  • "What's the weather like?"

Photos & Videos:

  • "Take a photo" / "Take a video"
  • Photos/videos save to your Meta AI app and can be shared to 18Birdies Community

FAQ:

1. Do I need Meta AI Glasses to use this feature?

Yes. This integration is built specifically for Meta AI smart glasses which include Meta Ray Bans, Wayfarers, Skylers’, Headliner, Scribner,  Meta Oakley HSTNs, Oakley Vanguards. You'll also need:

  • The Meta AI app (free download)
  • An active 18Birdies account (Free or Premium)
  • Your phone with you on the course (18Birdies app must be running)

If you don't have Meta Ray-Ban glasses, you can still use 18Birdies normally on your phone or Apple Watch.

2. Does this work if I don't have Premium?

Yes. The Meta Ray-Ban integration is available to all 18Birdies users, both Free and Premium. And the features that are premium on the Phone are premium on the glasses.

Free users get:

  • Distance to center of green
  • Basic score logging
  • Weather information
  • Photo/video capture

Premium users get:

  • Distance to pin (front/middle/back)
  • "Plays Like Distance" (adjusted for wind/elevation)
  • Club recommendations (requires Golf Bag setup)
  • All Free features

3. Do I need to have my phone with me, or can I leave it in the cart?

You need your phone with you on the course. Here's why:

  • The glasses communicate with the Meta AI app on your phone
  • The Meta AI app sends requests to 18Birdies on your phone
  • 18Birdies uses your phone's GPS to determine your location and calculate distances

Your phone doesn't need to be in your hand, but it should be in your pocket or bag within Bluetooth range of your glasses (typically 30 feet).

4. Why isn't Meta AI responding when I ask for distances?

Troubleshooting steps:

  1. Did you start a round in 18Birdies? The glasses can't start rounds for you. Open 18Birdies on your phone and start a round first.
  2. Is your phone nearby? Check that your phone is within Bluetooth range and the Meta AI app is running.
  3. Is the connection active? Go to Meta AI app → App Connections → 18Birdies. Make sure it shows "Connected."
  4. Do you have location/GPS enabled? 18Birdies needs GPS access to calculate distances. Check Settings → 18Birdies → Location → "While Using the App" or "Always."

5. How does Meta AI know which hole I'm on?

If you have **Smart Tracking enabled**, 18Birdies automatically detects which hole you're on based on your GPS location. Meta AI will reference this to give you accurate distances.

If Smart Tracking is off, you'll need to manually advance holes in the 18Birdies app on your phone.

6. Can I log putts and other stats through the glasses?

At launch, you can log your score (par, birdie, bogey, or stroke count). Additional stat tracking (putts, fairways hit, greens in regulation) must be logged manually in the 18Birdies app or use our Smart Tracking feature which will do it automatically during your round. We're exploring voice-based stat logging for future updates.

7. Do the photos and videos I take get saved to 18Birdies?

Photos and videos captured through your Meta Ray-Ban glasses are saved to the Meta AI app first. From there, you can:

  • Share them to the 18Birdies Community feed
  • Post them to Instagram, Facebook, or WhatsApp
  • Save them to your phone's camera roll

They won't automatically appear in 18Birdies—you'll need to manually share them if you want them in your golf profile.

8. What if someone else in my group also has Meta Ray-Ban glasses connected to 18Birdies?

No problem! Each person's glasses are paired to their own phone and Meta AI account, which connects to their individual 18Birdies account. You won't interfere with each other each golfer will get their own personalized distances and scores.

9. Can I use this feature offline or without cell service?

No. The integration requires an active internet connection because:

  • Meta AI needs to process your voice commands
  • 18Birdies needs to fetch course data and calculate distances
  • Weather information requires real-time data

If you're playing a course with poor cell reception, the glasses integration may not work reliably. You can still use 18Birdies directly on your phone in offline mode (if course data is pre-downloaded).

10. Does this drain my phone battery faster?

Yes, slightly. Running 18Birdies, Meta AI, Bluetooth, and GPS simultaneously will use more battery than using 18Birdies alone. We recommend:

  • Starting your round with a full charge
  • Using Low Power Mode if battery runs low
  • Bringing a portable charger for longer rounds or multi-round days
