Double Greens

Some golf courses use double greens, which means a hole may have two separate greens. The course may use one green on certain days and a different green on other days.

In 18Birdies, Double Greens allows supported courses to show different green locations so players can choose the correct green for their round. This helps improve GPS distances, course information, and the overall in-round experience.

This feature is currently available for select courses in Japan, where double greens are commonly used. We plan to support additional applicable courses over time.

What are Double Greens?

Double Greens are courses where a hole may have two separate greens.

The course may use one green on some days and the other green on different days. For example, some courses may label the greens by grass type, such as:

  • Bent
  • Korai

Other courses may use different names or labels depending on how the course identifies each green.

Why do some courses have two greens?

Courses may use double greens for different grass types, seasonal conditions, maintenance schedules, weather conditions, or course setup preferences.

Because each green may be in a different location, yardages and GPS distances can change depending on which green is being used that day.

How do Double Greens work in 18Birdies?

For supported courses, 18Birdies may allow you to select which green is being used for your round.

How It Works

Start your round like you normally would. If the course you are playing has double greens, a Switch Green button will appear on the right side of your screen. Tap it to swap between Green A and Green B at any point.

Selecting the correct green helps the app show more accurate:

  • GPS distances
  • Green locations
  • Hole maps
  • Course information
  • In-round yardages

Double Greens is currently available for select Japanese courses, with the goal of supporting more applicable courses in the future.

How do I choose the correct green?

When starting a round at a supported Double Greens course, check which green is being used by the course that day.

To choose the correct green:

  1. Open the 18Birdies app.
  2. Start a round at the course.
  3. Look for the green selection option, if available.
  4. Choose the green being used for your round.
  5. Start your round.

If you are not sure which green is being used, check with the golf course before starting your round.

What should I do if the green information is wrong?

If the green information, GPS location, or scorecard details are incorrect, contact support@18birdies.com.

Please include:

  • Course name
  • Course location
  • Hole number
  • Which green is incorrect
  • The correct green information, if known
  • Screenshots from the app
  • A scorecard, course map, or course website link, if available

The more detail you provide, the easier it is for our team to review the course.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Double Greens only for courses in Japan?

Double Greens is currently available for select Japanese courses.

We are aware that double greens exist at some courses outside of Japan. Those courses are not currently supported, but broader Double Greens support is on our roadmap.

Do I need Premium to use Double Greens?

No. Double Greens is available to all 18Birdies users at no additional cost.

How do I know which green is in play before my round?

18Birdies does not determine which green is in play.

The course staff will usually indicate which green is active before your round begins. This may be shared on the scorecard, at check-in, near the first tee, or by course staff.

If you are not sure which green is being used, check with the golf course before starting your round.

Can I switch greens after I have already started my round?

Yes. The Switch Green button is available during your round for supported Double Greens courses.

Tap Switch Green on the right side of your screen to swap between Green A and Green B whenever you need to.

Will switching greens affect my score or stats?

Switching greens updates your GPS distances and tracking data going forward.

It does not change shots, scores, or stats that were already recorded earlier in the round.

Why are my distances different than expected?

If the wrong green is selected, distances may not match the green being used that day.

Check the course’s daily green setup and confirm the correct green is selected in 18Birdies.

Why is there no heatmap for my green?

Heatmap data is pulled from a third-party source.

We are aware that some double greens are not yet showing heatmap data and are working to resolve this as quickly as possible.

What is the difference between Bent and Korai greens?

Bent and Korai refer to different grass types used on greens. Some courses, especially in Japan, may have both types available for the same hole.

Do all courses have Double Greens?

No. Double Greens only applies to courses that use two greens for the same hole.

My course has double greens, but I do not see the Switch Green option. What should I do?

The course may not currently support Double Greens in 18Birdies, or the course may not use double greens.

If your course has double greens and you do not see the Switch Green option, contact support@18birdies.com with the course name and location so our team can review it.
